A LEADER AND HIS VISION

Before we delve into the discourse, it is imperative and in fact necessary to firstly define what a leader is. A leader is defined as someone that guides and directs others. A leader is also defined as someone who inspires willing followership. Thus, it is crystal clear that leadership is accompanied by followership. This followership however, must be a deliberate one.

Vision on the other hand, is defined as the picture of a desirable future. Thus, it is not uncommon to have a leader with a vision. A leadership without vision is incomplete. This is because leadership paves the way for the birthing of future goals in the present.

Now, there is a connection between a leader and his vision that must be well understood. It is true that every leader must have vision but it is also true that  every vision must have a visionary who who is usually a leader. The main point however, is that leadership is more than guiding and directing others into the vision. Before any leader can sell the vision to his followers, they must be holding on to something than can actualize the vision. Every leader must be able to command followership that is convinced that the vision is realizable under the leader. Remember that the followershihp must be a willful one. Thus, people buy into the person of the leader before they buy into the vision. It then follows that the leader is more important than the vision at the initial stage. The vision only becomes important when it is in the hands of able leadership. A vision may be good but may never be actualized because of bad leadership. It is very regrettable that though, their are many good visions that may be actualized in the world today but there are not many good leaders to pioneer the visions. It is therefore important for we the youths to develop ourselves into true leaders so that the great vision we seek to achieve may be realized. The fruit of leadership is the actualization of the vision. It is at that point that leadership is deemed to be a successful one. It is never too late to raise our commitments to good leadership; our society will be better for it.
